Elusive Moments

Emily Shur

Born in New York City, Emily Shur (b. 1976) takes in the world through her lens, photographing locations as varied as Japan, Scotland, New Zealand and the USA. Well-versed in shooting editorial, advertising, portraits and landscapes, Shur’s clients include The New Yorker, Wired, GQ, HBO and many more. She has a star-studded portfolio of celebrities such as Will Ferrell, Helen Mirren, Seth Rogen and Hayley Williams but it is on travel images that the eye lingers. The photographer’s sensitivity towards colour and her quiet approach to scenery results in stunningly still images that uncover beauty in the most ordinary subjects. The following works are taken from her Japan series, which takes viewers on a journey through Japan, stopping at playgrounds, swimming underwater, eating lunch, window-shopping and wandering across countryside. Shur documents fleeting moments – towels drying on a rack, a flicker of light through a curtain – finding the importance in them and saving them forever.
