Close Out The Summer

Alternative Music Festivals

For the past few months, Rob Da Bank’s handwritten planning sheets have been getting messier and messier. Unlike other operators, the BBC Radio 1 DJ and the man behind Bestival, the much-loved event on the Isle of Wight that goes down every September, prefers to plan his entire festival using pen and paper.
“My team keep on trying to persuade me to use spreadsheets, Excel and all this computer stuff,” says the DJ otherwise known as Robert Gorham (b.1973). “I just can’t get to grips with looking at a computer screen and bringing that to life in the same way...”

Born Ruffians

Tell it like it is: Growing Up and the Importance of Communication

You already know Born Ruffians. The track Hummingbird from their previous album, Red, Yellow and Blue (2008) is instantly recognisable since it featured on Orange advertising campaigns and an episode of popular British drama Skins. Bassist, Mitch Derosier, is modest about this coup, musing that the successes, “were huge parts of us being able to tour the UK and gather a following. It came about because the director of the Skins episode liked the song and just asked us to be in the show.” You commonly find that when a song is so instantly catchy the follow-up album doesn’t live up to expectations, but if Say It is anything to go by, Born Ruffians has avoided the clutches of one-hit wonderland...

The Role of the Producer

Music Producers

A singer or a songwriter doesn't have to work that hard. Some would no doubt disagree - especially in the throes of writer's block or in the push to get an album finished, but once the perfect take is captured in studio, the main bulk of their work for that particular song is done.

Not so for the producer. Sure, they're responsible for creating and shaping the music, but the job of a professional producer is so much more. They have to be psychologist, voice coach, svengali and cheerleader...

Moving from Grey to Living in Colour

Frigtened Rabbit

Scotland and Indie rock bands go hand-in-hand. Think The Twilight Sad, Idlewild, The Fratellis and Biffy Clyro. Hailing from this breeding-ground of talent, more specifically Selkirk, is Frightened Rabbit. The band is front-man, Scott Hutchison's creation, joined in the early days by his percussionist brother, Grant. Hutchison's childhood tendencies to become antisocial when faced with other children earned him the moniker "Frightened Rabbit" from his mother. The reason this name resonates says a lot about the band's emotional and personal influences. "I'm definitely an observer rather than one to take part, and that plays a part in the way I see and respond to the world."
