For 10 days, during Frieze Art Fair, contemporary British artist Toby Ziegler in association with Simon Lee Galley, has installed a site specific exhibition in the basement of Q Park, a car park space accessed by lift and concealed 14 floors below street level on Old Burlington Street.

Ziegler has created an entirely new series of works tailor made for the underground space: his five imposing sculptures are influenced by Brueghel’s painting The Cripples and are surrounded by large-scale light boxes depicting an abstracted thicket of horses legs, derived from a detail of a Piero della Francesca fresco. The light boxes, a new medium for Ziegler, provide the only light source for the underground installation, replacing the windows of a more conventional space and illuminating Ziegler’s ominous sculptural works through muted tones and abstracted imagery.

A collision of place and time, this subversive exhibition brings together Ziegler’s newest works and his appropriations of Renaissance masters within an unlikely 21st Century setting. Ziegler makes reference to the degradation of images caused by repeated reproduction, often by sourcing low resolution images from the internet and translating them into imprecise digital models, which he then further abstracts on the painted, printed or sculpted surface.
