Les Rencontres d’Arles 2013

Visions in Black & White

With today’s abundance of colour photography, making images in black and white is a deliberate artistic decision for the contemporary photographer. In a world where vibrancy dominates the photographic stage, it is important to acknowledge those works that prefer to honour their monochrome predecessor. Choosing this developing landscape as the theme for Les Rencontres d’Arles, the festival arranges its 2013 presentation under the directional heading “In Black.” Showcasing an outstanding range of black and white photographs, the main purpose is to uncover the talents of new artists working the field. However, there is also a moment spent looking back and unearthing the historic treasures of images that have previously gone unnoticed. The following photographs are included in Les Rencontres d’Arles 2013, which runs across several locations in the city from 1 July until 22 September.
