Humanist Imagery

Bildhalle hosts the first solo show of work by René Burri since his passing in 2014. Organised in close cooperation with his family, Cosmopolitan commemorates this ‘Humanist with Camera.’ As an extensively travelling Magnum photographer, Burri leads his viewers to all corners of the world through his vivid photo reportages. A vast selection of his complex and empathetic gelatin silver and c-prints are on display in the exhibition. Collectively, they emphasise the photographer’s formal and dynamic visual language whilst providing an alternative insight into historical events.

“What counts is putting the intensity that you yourself have experienced into the picture. Otherwise it is just a document. But if you are truly successful in capturing the pulse of life, then you can speak of a good photograph.” – René Burri.
