Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Leckey (b. 1964) returns to Tate Britain, London, with O’ Magic Power of Bleakness, an exhibition of new and existing work featuring structure, experimental sound and video. Leckey presents his latest creation – a life-size replica of a motorway bridge on the M53 near his former hometown of Wirral, Merseyside. The bridge is the setting for a new audio play inspired by folklore, stories of changelings and the artist’s pre-adolescent experiences.

Leckey’s work has long intercepted themes of class, the north/south divide, pop culture and, as shown in the 1999 documentary Fiorucci Made Me Hardcore, the influence of wide-eyed rave culture on youth and British identity. O’ Magic Power of Bleakness represents the hidden pockets of motorways that welcomed thousands of illegal ravers each weekend in the late-1980s to early-1990s.
