Aesthetica Art Prize longlisted artist Tamara Dean, born in 1976, is a photographer whose practice extends from New York to Australia. Dean’s work explores the relationship between humans and nature, and her works are exhibited internationally. Her new series The Edge opened in 2014 at Olsen Irwin Gallery in Sydney, Australia.
Dean’s work is held in a number of public and private collections including Francis J. Greenburger Collection, New York; The Mordant Family Collection, Australia; Artbank, Australia, the Balnaves Collection, Australia, and the Gold Coast City Art Gallery, QLD. In 2013 Dean was selected for the Art Omi International artists residency in New York.
Set within the Australian landscape, Centre of the Universe from Dean’s Only Human series depicts our fragility and vulnerability, the notion that we are “only human”, while also acknowledging our intrinsic connection to the natural world. Her works explore the relationship between humans and nature, as witnessed against the background of the Australian Bush.
Dean’s artwork considers the informal rites of passage and rituals: the initiations, the pushing of physical, spiritual and emotional limits which are undertaken by human beings in order to discover their sense of self. She is interested in how we interact and engage with the natural world and with each other. Often, her works feature friends and family, finding that by photographing people closest to her, there is already a sense of intimacy and trust that makes the unguarded moments which she is trying to capture more readily accessible.
