The Aesthetica Creative Writing Award is inviting entries in short fiction and poetry from writers at all stages in their career. In addition to publication, £500 prize money, books from Vintage and Bloodaxe Books, we are delighted to announce that Aesthetica has partnered with Granta, the quarterly magazine of new writing, to offer each winner a subscription to the publication.
Submissions made by 31 August will be in with the chance to further their engagement with the international literary world and boost their career as writers through an array of excellent prizes. There will be a winner for both categories: Poetry and Short Fiction; there will also be a longlist of writers who will see their submitted pieces published in the Aesthetica Creative Writing Annual.
A subscription to Granta will provide writers with an opportunity to spark their passion for new writing. Granta magazine was founded in 1889 by students at Cambridge University as The Granta, a periodical of student politics, student badinage and student literary enterprise, named after the river that runs through the town. In this original incarnation it had a long and distinguished history, publishing the early work of many writers who later became well known, including A. A. Milne, Michael Frayn, Stevie Smith, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath.
Since 1979, the year of its rebirth, Granta has published many of the world’s finest writers tackling some of the world’s most important subjects, from intimate human experiences to the large public and political events that have shaped our lives. Championing the power and urgency of written work, Granta is a key supporter of new writing and celebrates the innovative and inspirational.
Granta contributors have included Martin Amis, Julian Barnes, Saul Bellow, Fatima Bhutto, Roberto Bolaño, A.S. Byatt, Anne Carson, Raymond Carver, Angela Carter, Bruce Chatwin, Edwidge Danticat, Lydia Davis, James Fenton, Richard Ford, Mavis Gallant, A.M. Homes, Gabriel García Márquez, Martha Gellhorn, Nadine Gordimer, Kazuo Ishiguro, Milan Kundera, Doris Lessing, Ian McEwan, Lorrie Moore, Haruki Murakami, Adrienne Rich, Salman Rushdie, Karen Russell, Zadie Smith, George Steiner, Edmund White, Joy Williams, Jeanette Winterson and Tobias Wolff.
