Running from 16 April – 22 June, shown together for the first time, five of Chris Marker’s multi-media installations will be on display at the Whitechapel Gallery as it celebrates the Director who is best known for his dedication to the “essay film”. This free exhibition of the influential filmmaker’s work will present films and photographs from throughout his notable career.

Marker, who died recently in 2012, was often associated with the Left Bank Cinema movement that occurred in the late 1950s. Imaging Paris devastated by nuclear catastrophe, his most famous work La Jetée (The Pier, 1962) is composed almost entirely of black-and-white still photographs creating a photomontage, with only one moving image scene in the entire film. The subject matter is said to have influenced Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys. Other films of note by Marker include Sans soleil (Sunless, 1983) and A Grin Without a Cat (Le Fond de l’air est rouge, 1977). The exhibition will also feature a newly re-mastered edition of Le Joli Mai (The Merry Month of May, 1963)

In addition to Marker’s work the gallery will include screenings of work by filmmakers Duncan Campbell, Filipa Cesar and Manu Luksch, the Barbican and Ciné Lumière at the Institut Français.
