The Daredevil Christopher Wright

In Deference to a Broken Back
Amble Down Records

On the cover there are three men who look like they’ve been transported back to grandma’s lounge somewhere in the 1970s, it must be the sofa, and the beards. However, the old refrains rings true; don’t judge a book by its cover. The opening track begins with strings and sentimentality with the lyrics: “I died on the way to the hospital. You cried all the way from the funeral. You cried.” So, it’s not cheerful, but can we really be happy all the time? A touch of realism?

Once you get past the first 1.08, this album opens right up. It becomes an algorithm of sounds, emotions gaining perspective with each chord. The sound is rich in nostalgia, wrapped up tight with representational lyrics. It seems like they are writing songs about the experiences of all our lives, so in that way, it’s an easy CD to seep into. Mixed by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, The Daredevil Christopher Wright is in good company.
