Anja Niemi’s She Could Have Been A Cowboy travels to The Ravestijn Gallery, Amsterdam, exploring notions of the self through staged compositions. The series returns to the iconic image of the American cowboy, a symbol largely drawn from the mythmaking of wild west movies. Questioning notions of gender and conformity, Niemi acts out the characters in every frame. The results are filmic, humorous and often tragic, exploring what it means to define oneself in a world of convention. As the artist notes: “The story is not really about being a cowboy. It’s about wanting to be another.” From 8 September.
