RSA New Contemporaries, Edinburgh

The best emerging artists are showcased in the sixth annual RSA New Contemporaries at the Royal Scottish Academy Galleries, Edinburgh, until 12 March. The exhibition features a carefully curated selection of 63 graduates selected from the degree shows in 2013, offering a unique insight into the Scottish artists of the future.

For 2014 RSA New Contemporaries presents the first ever Fleming-Wyfold Bursary, sponsored by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation, supporters of the Fleming Collection in Mayfair, London. Chosen from the exhibition displays, the recipient of this major award will receive a bursary of £10,000 plus an additional £4,000 towards project production costs. A critical aspect of this award is a mentoring scheme that will see Susanna Beaumont, curator, work with the winning artist for a year, offering guidance and support on the best use of the award to further their career.

In addition to the prize, a selection of works from the RSA New Contemporaries exhibition will be shown at the Fleming Collection in London in a new initiative, New Scottish Artists: a Royal Scottish Academy exhibition supported by the Fleming-Wyfold Foundation. The exhibition runs from 24 March until 31 May and will become an annual event, opening up opportunities for Scottish artists to promote themselves in London.

The works chosen for the exhibition were selected by Alan Robb RSA, exhibition convenor, with assistance from fellow academicians and representatives from the five main colleges of art, including, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art (Dundee University), Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh College of Art, Gray’s School of Art (Robert Gordon University) and Moray School of Art (University of the Highlands & Islands). This showcase offers the graduates the chance to launch their careers and exhibit a a substantial body of new work; including painting, sculpture, film making, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation. A large variety of work is on display, covering the medium of painting, sculpture, filmmaking, photography, printmaking, architecture and installation.

RSA New Contemporaries is both a celebration of emerging art and a representation of the RSA’s continued commitment to contemporary work in Scotland. All of the selected artists work closely with the RSA and develop a lasting relationship in the lead up to the exhibition, ensuring the candidates have all they need for a successful career in the industry.
