Portia Velarde

Reacting to urban anthropology Portia Velarde’s St James 1976-2017, studies the demolition of the centre in Edinburgh, a concrete shopping centre built in the 1970s. The wall piece made up of concrete sheets mimics the centre’s concrete serrated façade, in memory of those displaced from their homes when the original tenement housing was demolished to build the centre.

St James 1976-2017, 2017. 2.5m x 9m x 0.15m. Consists of 120 individual panels measuring 1200mm x 150mm x 3.2mm.
