Joan Andal Romano
Toronto-based painter and mixed media artist Joan Andal Romano’s works are visual representations of people, places and frozen moments in time.
The multicultural mix and rich historical backdrop witnessed in her childhood are her everlasting muses. She brings her visions to life using vibrant colours and creative chaos in design, pattern and texture.
For her Life is Art series, Andal Romano believes she painted herself in her last trimester of pregnancy. She explains: “I recall being asked to stay in bed for long periods of time while I was pregnant due to serious complications. I always dreamed of myself walking in art galleries and museums wearing my all-time favourite XL-summer dress, surrounding myself with wonderful large-scale art. I had to stay positive and so I consistently filled my thoughts with food and art. I am drawing from the concept of ‘life is art’ and ‘art is life'”.
