Hyun Kim

Hyun Kim’s work focuses on a central theme called “internalized power of state”. Kim explains: “It refers to the ‘anti-communism ideology’ internally engraved in individuals by the South Korean government, using the particular situation of the nation, the North-and-South confrontation during a truce. I aim to delve into how the power of a state functions within each individual, and reveal how internalised power of the state is reproduced and expanded by the society and the individuals within it.”

Throughout Kim’s work there is the use of archival images, découpage and collage to convey the internalised power of state in two perspectives in various artworks in the series: the individual as the receiver of oppression and the individual as the agent of the oppression.
