Repetition and the interaction between formed materials are the foundational themes in the work of Berlin-based artist Franziska Stolzenau.
A movement that expresses a state of mind is repeated and translated into a line and then worked into the material. Rather than reproducing the reality or creating an illusion, her drawings make the process itself visible – the repetition of a movement that changes the material in its form.
Through reiteration, this action itself becomes an artefact: a movement becomes drawing becomes sculpture. The boundaries of genres are stretched; the viewer witnesses a metamorphosis from simple movement to a metaphysical expression.
