London Art Fair: Transitions and Dialogues

January 2017 sees the return of the premier London Art Fair. The 29th edition presents a diverse selection of contemporary art and photography from within the UK, and invites guest-curators to provide a showcase of innovative pieces to an audience of art enthusiasts and collectors from all over the globe.

13 lens-based artists have been chosen to participate in the Photo50 exhibition curated by Christine Monarchi, the editor of online magazine Photomonitor. The selection, entitled Gravitas, is inspired by the Latin word meaning “depth of character” and it represents the idea of  transitioning from youth to adulthood. The 50 photographic pieces examine the progressive stages of adolescence, focusing specifically on development and identity formation. As a collective, the images present a narrative that expresses the impact of subcultures on teenagers and their life experiences. Mental health, obesity, gender and sexuality are some of the central themes throughout this engaging display.

Another curator is Peter Hall, founder of Lightbox gallery, who is working as a museum partner for the 2017 project. To mark its 10-year anniversary, the gallery is  hosting a unique exhibition in the pavilion entrance of the Fair. The show comprises a selection of significant modern British art works from The Ingram Collection, Ten Years: A Century of Art,  which includes key works by pioneering 20th century artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore and Eric Ravilious. This collection tells the story of discovery and innovation that took place throughout this period through a display of drawings, paintings and sculptural pieces.

Art Projects: Dialogues is a hugely important element of the annual event as it is the communicative international platform used to showcase some of the most stimulating contemporary practices. This section of the Fair features collaborative presentations between gallery partners from the UK and all over the world, inviting emerging galleries to participate in this celebratory event. For the majority of pieces on display, it is their first London exhibition and there are a number of UK and world exclusives included in the selection.
