The Hepworth Wakefield and International Dialogues in Art Projects at London Art Fair

Until 19 January, the 26th edition of the London Art Fair, showcasing the best of Modern British and contemporary art, will feature its first museum partnership with The Hepworth Wakefield. As part of this new partnership, the gallery will be exhibiting a unique collection of British Modernism, as well as a brand new collection of international Dialogues to be curated by Adam Carr of MOSTYN in celebration of the 10 year anniversary of the London Art Fair Art Projects series.

Curated by Frances Guy, Head of Collections and Exhibitions at The Hepworth Wakefield, Barbara Hepworth and the Development of British Modernism greets visitors at the fair’s entrance. The exhibition highlights the museum’s crucial involvement in the work of young artists in the 1920s and 1930s, a vital factor to the preservation of this period of British art. Featuring iconic works such as Hepworth’s Kneeling Figure (1932) the collection captures the impact of an important generation of artists. Alongside this exciting exhibit will be modern British art dealers Jonathan Clark Fine Art, PIANO NOBILE and Rowntree Clark.

This reflection on the influential museum sets the tone for the rest of the fair. Both UK and international galleries will join at the London Art Fair to show works ranging from the early 1900s to the present day. Highlights include major names such as Francis Bacon, David Hockney and Eduardo Paolozzi as well as lesser known up-and-coming artists to watch out for at the Jealous Gallery. With galleries devoted to Japanese avant-garde, 2012 Sculpture Shock winner Nika Neelova, the African art of Gonçalo Mabunda, a William John Kennedy documentary film and much more besides, there is something to suit every taste at this year’s fair.

The new Dialogues section features collaborative presentations between UK and overseas galleries. The four collaborations on display come from: DREI, Cologne and Limoncello, London; Galeria Stereo, Warsaw and The Sunday Painter, London; SABOT, Romania and Maria Stenfors, London and Frutta, Rome and Seventeen, London. Other new galleries for 2014 include Brooklyn’s Muriel Guépin Gallery and Paris’s UN-SPACED which will feature work with an interest in fictional and parallel universes. This exciting marriage of styles is sure to produce some fantastic exhibitions.

A large and varied programme of talks, tours and debates in association with key partners and guest speakers such as Sotheby’s Institute of Art, Apollo Magazine and film-maker Alison Jackson will accompany the galleries. On Thursday 16 January there will also be a programme of artist performances and film screenings as the fair stays open until 9pm.
