Magdalene Keaney
Thames & Hudson

The fashion photograph has become a central part of today’s visual language. From advertising to editorial, these stylised, artistically inspired, ultraglamorous images are everywhere. It is therefore somewhat surprising that it is only just over a hundred years since this type of photography first appeared in magazines.

The instantaneous nature of the form makes it the perfect medium to capture new trends the moment they happen, and fashion photography is at the forefront of avant-garde practices. Rather than celebrating the established names, such as Juergen Teller, Mario Testino, Wolfgang Tillmans etc., Fashion Photography Next  takes a look at the artists shaping the aesthetics of tomorrow.

The emotive and gentle portraits of Boo George sit side by side with the brutally beautiful in Samuel Hodge’s work and the surrealist dreams of Brendan Baker & Daniel Evans. In bringing together 35 photographers from 14 countries, Magdelene Keaney covers a broad range of approaches, documenting the appreciation of classic portraiture and the rise of more innovative angles.
