Alon Zakaim Fine Art has the pleasure of hosting Second Focus, an exhibition of oil paintings by Dan McDermott. Returning to Cork Street with his second solo exhibition of photorealist work, McDermott's latest collection breathes new life into scenes and figures from decades past.
Born of a childhood fascination with the glamour of adult life captured in movies and film, McDermott's work is directed by his attraction to the reproduced image. Drawing upon archives of photographic stills collected from film, internet, television and documentary footage from the 1940s to the present, McDermott reintroduces the subjects of these stills to the contemporary eye.
Dan McDermott has exhibited extensively throughout Britain and abroad since graduating from the University of Northumbria in 1995. Most recently he has been involved in a number of solo and group exhibitions in London and New York, including shows held at the Northcote Gallery, London, The Clapham Gallery, London and The Silas Marder Gallery, New York.

In Association with the Pakistan National Council of the Arts and the National Art Gallery Islamabad Pakistan
Curated by Alison Darnbrough & Marjorie Husain
This major exhibition showcases the work of leading artists living and working in Pakistan and the UK and looks at the influence of culture and heritage.
At a time when freedom of expression and information have been suppressed in the country the four artistsâ - Shahida Ahmed, Jamal Shah, Iqbal Husain and Nahid Raza â are able to speak through their art about such issues as oppression, the role of women in a male-oriented society, personal freedom and religion.
As exhibitions go, this one couldn't be more timely, with Pakistan in the midst of a political crisis, yet another layer of meaning is added to what is already an ambitious and far reaching show.

Celebrating the art of drawing - Drawing Out exhibition
Monday 21st April 2008 - Friday 9th May 2008

Duration: All day event
Location: Midlands
Sketches and doodles by art and design staff at Nottingham Trent University are to be shown as part of a major exhibition celebrating the practice of drawing. Drawing Out will feature hundreds of illustrations by both academic and support staff, which will be combined to create a huge âdrawing wallâ for the event from April 21 to May 9.
Everybody from the Dean of the School of Art and Design, right through to academics and support staff are being invited to contribute to the exhibition, being staged in the universityâs Bonington and 1851 Galleries.
The event will also feature a curated show of work by artists based in the School, which will attempt to look at drawing in its widest sense.
This will range from working drawings for set and costume design, to illustrations that use new laser-cutting technology as a drawing tool; and a series of illustrations produced for publication in international newspapers, to photographic responses to archived drawings in the university's international lace collection.
"Drawing is and always has been seen as a core element within art and design education, and is an activity that pervades all courses within the School of Art and Design," said Professor Terry Shave, exhibition co-ordinator and Academic Team Leaders for Visual Arts.
He added: "Everybody has a view of what drawing is and what drawing should be in art schools and this will be an opportunity to push boundaries and pose questions on the subject. It is also a celebration of the university as a place for dynamic, contemporary art and design, as well as a community of people who meet on a daily basis in a work environment."
As well as The Drawing Wall and curated show, the exhibition will feature hands-on drawing sessions for staff and students, which will include the creation of a white board animation. There will be a roundtable discussion on what drawing means to different people, an online spotlight of images which have significant meanings for staff, and invited speakers from the School of Art and Design.

LAURA BUCKLEY+ALEXIS HARDING at Bruun Bazaar, with Carter Presen

Carter Presents has teamed up with Bruuns Bazaar in a new concept space on Albemarle Street in Mayfair London. The new Bruuns Bazaar project space is devoted to providing a platform for artists to develop new work. The gallery on Albemarle Street, Mayfair, is in a listed Georgian building and comprises of two inter-connected rooms. The concept and format for the exhibition is two solo shows in self-contained spaces where each artist's practice interrelates and plays off of the other.
For the inaugural exhibition, Laura Buckley and Alexis Harding, two London based artists, each separately explore materiality through a conceptual framework initially influenced by modernist reductionism. Both artists approach their medium (painting and film projection) in a sculptural manner, expanding the traditional boundaries of the support/screen.
Alexis Harding explores the processes and physicality of paint literally bringing the painting to earth as the viscosity and liquidity of the medium follows Newton's Laws to fall to the gallery floor and create new forms. For Harding, painting is a process, a skin, a physically tangible and alchemical substance. The kinetic nature of the wet media simultaneously teases and critiques the very nature of painting. Bringing to mind Anish Kapoor's early pigment sculptures of the 1960's, this work playfully engages with the serious ongoing debates of endgame painting which gained prominence with Stella and Ryman the 60's. As the paint slips off the canvas into a pool on to the floor the painting becomes sculptural. Unanswered questions are reinvigorated and brought back to the fore.
Laura Buckley's work demystifies itself by structural and material means. She exposes the process of making and presenting work.
Her works are often semi-performative, featuring reflective supports within the natural environment, both framing and dramatically contrasting the setting.
Studio activities are juxtaposed with real life events, exploring and blurring points of separation and overlap.Hers is a multi-layered referential conversation between component materials.
Buckley uses the devices of kinetic sculptural installation and video projection to question art and illusion, reality and perception.Place : BRUUNS BAZAAR - 48 Albemarle St - London

Hell and High Tea
Exhibition of work by Nancy Farmer at Galleryeight, 8 Market Place, Glastonbury, Somerset BA6 9HW
Mythology, fairytale, satire, fetish and a dash of domestic reality blend together in these paintings. Medusa is here in several guises; the little-known Mrs Minotaur reclines in the labyrinth; devils strive to grow cacti in hell, while fairies snigger improperly over amusingly-shaped flowers. Undertones of subversion and overtones of humour colour the re-working of stories we thought we knew.
Nancy's art: Sullen fairies, belligerent demons and other curious monsters - dark, whimsical contemporary art, all with a satirical edge and a twist of humour Nancy's paintings could be mistaken for fantasy art â but this is not quite accurate, rather, she holds a murky and distorted mirror up to ordinary life.
Her characters resonate with modern-day decadences - the fairies are delinquent; the devils bored, half-heartedly persecuting the Dammed merely because it is their job to do so; the guardian angel is fat and indolent, her rose-tinted spectacles shielding any wrong-doing from her 'watchful' eyes. A sad lost gentleman is found in a bar full of curious demons, but refuses to leave and admit heâs in the wrong place, while the smartly dressed devil is equally on edge in a rather tacky wine bar full of âordinaryâ people. Here are monsters and demons, certainly, but here are also our colleagues, friends and relations, and it is often uncertain quite which are which.
Nancy is largely self-taught as a painter. Having completed a degree in jewellery design at Glasgow school of Art, and an MA in Metalwork conservation at the V&A Museum, she turned to painting in around 1999. In 2002 she moved to Somerset and took up her artwork as a full-time career.

Paolo Bigazzi, Italian artist, was born in Livorno and studied at the Academy of Fine Art in Florence at the "Scuola del Nudo". Living a stone's throw from the Duomo, he imbibed the artistic atmosphere of the city which would prove to have a profound influence on him.
After five years he sought inspiration in the South of France and settled for some time in Cap d'Antibes. He spent his time living and working alongside the painters there and ceramic artists from the nearby village of Vallauris.
On returning to Italy, he became a member of the "Cenacolo" group of artists, led by Pietro Annigoni. During this time, interest in his work started to grow and galleries throughout Europe and the United States introduced him to a wider audience.
In the last ten years, he has divided his time between England and Tuscany, where he continues to produce and exhibit the work which has given him the stature he enjoys today.

New work is hatching down at the Cooper Gallery, Barnsley where 15 local artists, collectively known (for their rarity!) as Hens Teeth have been brooding over a whole new body of work. This exciting, diverse and stimulating display of original new pieces in a wide variety of materials questions our understanding about originality and precedence in art creation.
The artists participating in the new exhibition have all used as their starting point at least one of the paintings and sculptures in the Cooper Gallery Permanent Collection. It will be intriguing to see these works (some of which have not been on public view for a long time) on display alongside the new paintings, ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles & more, that have evolved in direct response to them. To compliment the exhibition each artist will additionally provide their own supporting sketchbooks giving a rare peek into the processes of art creation.
There will be workshops with the artists for local school children during the exhibition. For more information or to register interest in attending a workshop please contact the Cooper Gallery on 01226 242905 or, for information about Hens Teeth and examples of members previous work please visit their website www.hensteeth-visualarts.co.uk

âLong established mediums harmonize with new mediaâ
curated by Lloyd Gill
CLARE CARTER + ROSS MARKLEW + KATE BASSETT + ED ASHTON + TIM SKINNER + JONATHAN MOSS + IAN PENNA + MANUEL CAPURSO
The title of this group exhibition is âlong established mediums harmonize with new mediaâ and the Lloyd Gill Gallery has gathered eight participating Artists. This group exhibition has investigated into the divisions of Contemporary Art, by showing an exhibition that elevates new media with older techniques. The gallery has selected Artists that work in Sculpture, Painting, Printmaking, with Artists working in Video and Photography.
Clare Carter, who has recently finished a residency in Norway this year, is showing three paintings from a series of
work produced from another residency in Cyprus last year. Her work epitomises distinct narratives through
transforming everyday scenes of gesture and rural landscape to slowdown human characteristics. Clare has
received numerous awards including a Scholarship from Sandnes Kommune for 10 week residency at Stasjon
K Studios, Sandnes, Norway in 2008. In 2007, Clare was awarded a Leonard Da Vinci grant (Grampus Heritage
Fund) for 3 month residency at Cyprus College of Art, Pafos, Cyprus. The Arts Council England supplied Clare
with a grant for a 3 month residency at Upernavik Museum, Upernavik, Greenland in 2006. Clare studied for a
BA in Fine Art (hons) at Batley School of Art & Design (UK) and continued her studies at the Cyprus College
of Art for a Post-Graduate Diploma Fine Art and a ASET Exhibition Organisation during 2006.
Ross Marklewâs paintings made a sudden transition from representation to abstraction after an experimental period while studying in Cardiff for a BA (hons). His work âview of Newport Roadâ is a mystical interpretation with loss of perspective to enhance the dreamscape quality. Ross graduated with a BA in Fine Art (hons) at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2003 â 2006, (First Class)
Edward Ashton creates multiple depictions using collage which evolve into finalised paintings. Material is collected from a number of sources including old postcards. The images tend to be of a non-personal nature, and have predominantly focused on landscape and architecture. The landscapes tend to be dramatic, inspired by romantic paintings, while the buildings are often monumental. Edward graduated with a BA in Fine Art (hons) at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2003 â 2006, (First Class)
Kate Bassett is a printmaker based in Cardiff. Kate is a dedicated printmaker working primarily in the intaglio
processes of collagraph and drypoint. These techniques require physicality and demand a âhands onâ approach
which I respond well to. Kate develop ideas for her work by studying drawings and photographs of streets and
communal gatherings. The work is often melancholy yet humorous. Kate feels this is reinforced by my drawing
style which gives a theatrical and dramatic sense of space. Kate graduated with a BA in Fine Art (hons) at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2003 â 2006,(First Class).
Tim Skinner will be showing a number of videoâs which explore his fascination of understanding sound as a visual
format. Each video inhabits the movements of sound, which corresponds as a visual representation our perception
recognises, such as the film âButterflyâ. Tim will be showing a number of prints along side his video work. Tim
graduated in 2003 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Colchester School of Art and Design. He later received a Graduate
scholarship award in 2003-2004 at the Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester.
Jonathan Moss works in video, painting and printmaking. Elements of nineteenth century European northern
romantic landscape painting are important to Jonathan for example, a search for God in nature and
adopting light and darkness as metaphors, whilst he simultaneously takes inspiration
from modernism, especially the Abstract Expressionists acknowledging the painting as a thing in itself,
the importance of the act of making and exploring the tension between abstraction and figuration.
Jonathan will be showing videos that are in conjunction to paintings and prints which contribute
to the series âRivesaltes (Shoah)â. Jonathan has currently completed his studies at the Royal College of Art,
London. PEP, Department of Printmaking in 2006. He studied for a PGCE at Oxford University during
1995â1996 and completed a MA in Fine Art and Art History at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth,
UK during 1991 â 1993.
Ian Penna works in Sculpture and the selected work for this exhibition transpires the use of correlating
materials to collect into a state of formulating matter. He combines his skills of preparation, investigation,
manipulation and the application of the materials in space. Ian graduated from Falmouth University with a
BA in Fine Art (hons) and was one of the four finalists for the 2007 Midas Award, Artonomy Fine Art, Truro.
Ian is a member of the N.S.A ( Newlyn Society of Artists).
Manuel Capurso is showing a selection of Photography from the series of work âbeyond the darknessâ,
which was generated while studying at the London College of Communication. The work in this series
embodies a delusional state of perception, through the use of targeted light thwarted into darkened social arenas.
Manuel graduated with an MA Photography, with distinction from the London College of Communication in 2007.
He completed a Graduate Certificate in Digital Lens Based Image making from the London College of
Communication, London in 2006. Manuel studied for a Masters degree in Labour Science, Statale University,
Milan, Italy - Universidad de Granada, Spain in 2000. He has also completed a first degree in Political Science,
specialisation in International â Politics Statale University, Milan, Italy during 1997/98. Manuel has been selected for
the Photo Espana, Descubrimientos 2008 â finalist and also the Student discovery award â selection 100 finalists
in 2007.

Moor Music Festival is a small and beautifully formed weekend party filled with creativity, music, mayhem, great food and drink (not at rip off prices!) and enjoys a truly unique atmosphere.
Put together by a group of friends who've come from a background of some of the great woodland, wasteland and wildland parties held throughout North Yorkshire over the past fifteen years, the festival is run independently and without sponsorship.
So come along, meet friends and make friends at what is coming to be known as the good vibed reunion weekender for people in the north and beyond.
Imagine a village fete with a twist, wild camping with benefits or your eccentric aunt's parties in the seventies and you'll be just about there.
But don't take our word for it, jump in... the water's lovely.

All of us have a story to tell. We donât need to have climbed Mount Everest or to have wrestled with a crocodile, we donât need to have won an Olympic medal or have been born with a voice like Pavarottiâs, but we all have a story to tell.
âWriting from Memoryâ with Maggie Sawkins and writers hub THE SOUTH, is a one day workshop that will help writers of any genres and levels delve into their creative reserves by delving into their past.
To write an account of every moment of our lives would be impossible. Most autobiographies are selections and re-workings of truths. One way to begin is by sifting through our memories, by reliving moments from our past, by finding ways of recording. Of course our memory of an event may be entirely different from that of a sibling, a parent, or friend. But thatâs what makes our stories unique, they carry our signature, they are our stories.
Maggie comments: âIt is often the little things that are left untold that have mean the most. But where do we start? How do we decide which bits to leave in and which to leave out? This workshop will help anyone wanting to write a personal account answer those questions.â

Milton Keynes Gallery presents the most comprehensive exhibition in the UK by artist Cathy Wilkes. Born and raised in Belfast, Wilkes is one of a generation of artists who was educated in Glasgow and emerged at the forefront of British visual arts practice the mid 1990s. The exhibition, which comprises new and recent work, will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.
Wilkes's work is characterised by the creation of a slowly emerging, distinctively personal vocabulary of sculptures and paintings which she makes and re-makes in evolving assemblages and environments. Her processes are measured and refined, drawing on the most intimate of personal experiences to create a compelling autobiographical thread, coupled with a precise and liberated formal language. Wilkes confidently and unapologetically selects the most abject and awkward of domestic, everyday objects; a widescreen Sony television, a Maclaren's push chair or a jar of Bonne Mamam apricot preserve have all been incorporated in Wilkes's expansive installations.

Short Fuse and THE SOUTH join creative forces for Brighton Festival Fringe
With the growing number of short story festivals, flash fiction competitions, and live lit nights cropping up in the South East and nationally, there is now a greater opportunity for developing writers to âexhibitâ or âperformâ their work.
To help them on their way, live lit organisation Short Fuse has teamed up with writers hub THE SOUTH to run a four week workshop, âWriting Out Loudâ. It is aimed at people who are interested in taking their work to an audience, and seeks to help develop their writing skills on the page, as well as the production of a short story that works well off the page too.
Polly Tuckett and Tara Gould, directors of Short Fuse, the cult monthly short fiction night held at Brightonâs Komedia, will be running this innovative course.
Writers themselves, Tara and Polly understand the creative needs of the those that work with words. Tara comments: âWriting doesn't have to mean doing time in a lonely garret. Learning how to write a story that delivers both on and off the page, in terms of content and performance is an invaluable tool in today's literary world, where self-promotion through presenting ones work at live lit events is an important part of being a writer.â
Polly continues: âBy the end of the course, students will experience the satisfaction of reading their work out to an audience that hangs on every word.â
Tara Gould has taught creative writing for CCE at Sussex University, and privately, since 2000. She has won two awards for her short fiction and has had two plays on BBC Radio 4. After a degree in theatre she completed an MA in Art, Education and Creative Writing. Polly Tuckett has taught creative writing and writes for children and adults. She has been shortlisted for prestigious short fiction competitions and has had work published in writing magazines.

Connections aims to help fledgling writers and poets discover all sorts of connections and associations between images, sounds, ideas, traditions, meanings, words and whole poems themselves. Participants will take part in collaborative and individual exercises and writing activities and will have several pieces of work in progress by the end of the day.
Mandy comments: Connections is aimed at new writers and anyone that wants to come along to explore what might happen. The day will be hard work but also a lot of fun, exciting and stimulating.

So you think you know the Seven Deadly Sins? But do you know the punishments meted out to each of the sinners? The lustful are forced to writhe in flames for all eternity, the proud are crushed beneath heavy stones and the envious have their naughty covetous eyes sewn shut with wire.
In a new exhibition of paintings at Nua, Eve Poland depicts each sin and its punishment in her irreverent illustrative style, incorporating typographic elements into each beautiful piece.
A Brighton local, Eves work features in private collections across the country. Using recurrent themes of power, beauty and sexuality, Eve likes the art to speak for itself.

All of us have a story to tell. We donât need to have climbed Mount Everest or to have wrestled with a crocodile, we donât need to have won an Olympic medal or have been born with a voice like Pavarottiâs. All lives are important - it is often the little things that are left untold that have mean the most. But where do we start? How do we decide which bits to leave in and which to leave out? To write an account of every moment of our lives would be impossible. Most autobiographies are selections and re-workings of truths. One way to begin is by sifting through our memories, by reliving moments from our past, by finding ways of recording. Of course our memory of an event may be entirely different from that of a sibling, a parent, or friend. But thatâs what makes our stories unique, they carry our signature, they are our stories.
Maggie Sawkins spent her childhood in Leigh Park, a large council housing estate north of Portsmouth. She began writing poetry at the age of nine after being inspired by her head teacher. Her first poems were published in Hampshire Poets when she was seventeen. In 2004 Maggie co-founded the popular Tongues & Grooves Poetry and Music Club in Southsea where she now lives with her husband, younger daughter and a growing menagerie. Flarestack published a pamphlet collection, Charcotâs Pet, in 2003. The Zig Zag Woman (Two Ravens Press) is her first full collection.

The highly anticipated exhibition in Gormleys Fine Art Belfast will showcase the work of four artists using a language of abstraction to explore the visual essence of the landscape. Each artist generates images, which are a creative response to the shapes and structures of the Irish landscape.
The work presented in this exhibition reflects four very different interpretations of the formal elements of composition, form, light and colour, and yet maintain a recognisable essence of the Irish landscape. These artists have the strength in their work to convey the relentless energy, combined with the enduring calmness of the elemental forces of nature. For further information contact www.gormleys.ie

To what extent does location, nationality and geography play a role in the production, direction and dissemination of contemporary art? For ATM08, Castlefield Gallery has invited two artist groups from the islands of Taiwan and Singapore to present new site-specific work in the island of Great Britain. Channel_A (Hongjohn Lin and Ella Raidel) from Taiwan and p-10 (represented by Woon Tien Wei, Jennifer Teo working with collaborators Jeremy Chu and Kai Lam) from Singapore have both developed work that engages with the cultural, political and social climates they operate in, through different avenues of enquiry.
In addition to the new work by Channel_A and p-10, Castlefield Gallery will host the teahouse hub in the Upper Gallery in which visitors will be able to drink tea brought to Manchester by the artists showing at the various ATM08 venues across Manchester thereby representing the participating countries of Mainland China, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Singapore and Taiwan. There will also be a travelling teahouse located throughout Greater Manchester, a network of temporary sites that will host a range of talks, panel discussions, performances, workshops and events commonly linked under the teahouse idea. Marginalia Part 1: How the words came into being.

Marginalia: Parts 1 & 2 - a two-site installation by Richard Bowers.
Part 1: How the words came into being.
Part 2: The passage through Hell is a spiral.
The Washington Gallery, Penarth, and the School of Psychology, Cardiff University, are the locations for two installations presenting readings through a translation of the 'Inferno' of mediaeval Italian poet, Dante. Large-scale images create a backcloth for a drama of sound: an exploration of the transitions between intelligible vocal utterance and noise. Speech is decimated and regurgitated as a composition taking on 'mobile form' within the spaces. The sounds are a commentary on the text: marginal notes; underlinings; crossings out; pages torn out and defaced.
Similarly the images, derived from the nineteenth century illustrations for a translation of the Inferno, are excisions with 'notes' added to them - writings, effacements, reinforcements - that recombine to form original compositons.
Taken as a whole, the two installations can be seen as an aggressive reworking of a physical book.
The installation at the Washington Gallery runs from April 20th until May 20th and the School of Psychology installation shall run throughout the Summer Term.
About the artist:
Much of Richard's sonic and musical work balances the spontaneity of live performance with the reflective, editorial control to be found in the studio. He uses software tools to transfigure the spectral integrity of the sounds in order to extend the timbres of the sound objects. He frequently obtains the source material from musical instruments and, in Marginalia, he has worked exclusively with recordings of speech to form the palette of sounds.
His pieces have been played on radio and in concerts, sometimes with live instruments, sometimes as pure acousmatic works. A collaboration with Ian Watson and Gwilly Edmondez under the collective name 'The Sound of Aircraft Attacking Britain', commissioned by Sightsonic Digital Arts Festival in 2001, led to further collaborations including 'Botanising on the Asphalt' and 'Seasonally Affected', which were selected for performance at Experimentica and Sonic Arts Network's 'Expo '07' respectively. Recently, solo works were presented at Futuresonic '07 and broadcast on ArtRadio from the Cornerhouse, Manchester, and a selection of 'Seven Intermezzo's' are included on the Brave New Wales CD.
Marginalia, the first major solo project by the artist, represents a culmination of many years working within sonic art and music fields and draws upon his experience as a painter and printmaker.
Marginalia is made possible with the financial support of the Arts Council of Wales with additional support from Cardiff University (School of Psychology) and the Washington Gallery.

Thinking of starting a novel? Tried before and found yourself getting bogged down? Think again. This class aims to unlock your novel writing potential. Break your novel into fragments, build it piece by piece, construct your novel from memories, anecdotes, stories, scenes. Create charismatic characters and learn some techniques on how to control description, on how to create meaningful dialogue. Lead the reader into the story, let them see and feel the characters you create. Whether your approach is to meticulously plan, or if it is chaotic, disorganised, this is the course for you. We will look at how to allow a story to develop and will write about people, places, events, and then see how to gradually piece a novel together. There's no one way to write a novel, this course will help you unlock the way that best suits your style.
Anthony Cropper has published two highly acclaimed novels (Jack and Sal, Weatherman) and has co-edited three collections of short stories. In 2005 he won the prestigious BBC Alfred Bradley Award for Radio Drama and has written for Radio 4 (afternoon play). He works full-time as a writer and has worked with many arts organisations on experimental text/music CDs and installations. He has held residencies in this country and abroad and is an experienced tutor of creative writing. He is currently working on his third novel.
