Transcending Boundaries with Aabru Art

Running from 17 – 22 March, Transcending Boundaries is a new exhibition at London’s Aabru Art. Following the success of a similar exhibition last year, Aabru Art founder Anshu Bahanda has created a collection of works for sale involving 11 of West Africa’s most respected contemporary artists

Ranging from wooden sculpture to oil painting, Transcending Boundaries draws on inspiration from the heritage of West Africa and is made up of previously unseen works. Uniting 11 prolific West African artists, the exhibition will explore cultural legacy, with the artists encouraged to work outside the boundaries of conformity and represent the history Of West Africa with initiative and fresh perspectives.

The show, where prices for individual pieces will range from £3,000 to £30,000, will feature the world premiere of work from artists such as Reuben Ugbine, Abiodun Olaku and Fidelis Odogwu. Ugbine, who was born in Ghana in 1956, works in wooden sculpture, whilst Nigerian artist Olaku, born in Lagos and highly successful in his native country, is known for his realism-driven oil painting. Odogwu, who was born in the Delta State in 1970, uses intricate metal work often resembling leather to create unusual and striking sculpture.

This exhibition will draw together artists from all over West Africa, and the founder of Aabru Art hopes that the show will bring with it a lasting legacy for African art, as well as propel the work of West African artists into the international market.
