START Art Fair, Saatchi Gallery, London

START is a focused art fair, limited to 44 young galleries showcasing new artists from around the world. The aim is to give young galleries a global platform to display their artists’ work at an important stage in their development and to bring them to the attention of a culturally engaged audience. This year the international line-up includes exhibitors from Australia, Turkey, South Africa, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, India, Italy, Myanmar, the UK and the USA.

Rather than standard art fair booths, START displays the artwork in museum exhibition spaces and is a great fair to discover new artists. Richard Koh Fine Art represents Malaysia and Singapore and is one of Southeast Asia’s most experimental new galleries: they will present a diverse range of young artists at the show. These will be complemented by the work of pioneering contemporary Saudi artists such as Sami Al Tuki and Ahmed Mater from Athr Gallery.

The galleries shown will be a mixture of rising stars and more established artistic centres. There is a fantastic emerging market coming out of Azerbaijan and Yay! Gallery presents some of the country’s most up-and-coming young artists. South Africa is represented here by Brundyn + and artist Mohau Modisakeng, whilst ROH Projects from Indonesia showcases a solo presentation of Christine Ay Tjoe’s work, a new talent from their budding international collection.

Typifying the gallery’s cross-media approach, START will also feature an experimental space created by Arcadia Missa (UK), one of the most innovative new galleries in London.
