Q&A with Turner Prize Nominee Isaac Julien: Aesthetica Short Film Festival

At BAFTA Qualifying Aesthetica Short Film Festival: ASFF, we welcome Turner Prize nominee Isaac Julien for a special Q&A hosted by Art Historian Dr James Boaden on Friday 7 November. This presents a rare opportunity to hear directly from and gain insight into the practice of one of Britain’s leading artists’ filmmakers. Julien will explore how the genre is developing inside and outside of the gallery as well as audiences’ responses to changing techniques in artist filmmaking.

Since he began making films in 1983, Julien has become one of the most compelling and experimental artist filmmakers in practice today. In a wide range of feature films, meditative documentaries and art installations, he has consistently traversed challenging subject matter such as migration, economics, visual representation, homophobia and racism. Julien will draw upon his extensive experience at ASFF to share his views and reflect upon current developments in the industry.

ASFF 2014 runs from 6 to 9 November in 15 iconic venues across the city of York. Moving between medieval halls, art galleries and cinemas visitors are invited to create their own unique viewing experience. The masterclasses provide a chance to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of film, both in its artistic form and as a narrative tool, as well as exploring practical aspects of filmmaking such as editing, production, cinematography, distribution and funding.

Artists’ film is a major part of ASFF 2014’s programme, with the line-up of over 300 films including 72 art and experimental shorts from both established and emerging filmmakers working today. Selected from over 1,500 entries, each work is conceived as an exploration into the fundamental elements of moving-image making, investigating technical processes, narrative structures and form to expose the language of film and repurpose it in imaginative ways.

There will also be several networking opportunities with leading figures from the arts sector, including Maggie Ellis, Head of Artists’ Moving Image Network (FLAMIN), Film London, and Steven Bode, Director of Film and Video Umbrella.
