OBEY Collaborates with Artist Deedee Cheriel

Visual artist, Nalini “Deedee” Cheriel, has teamed up with OBEY clothing to produce a unique fashion collection. The artist started out creating record covers and T-shirts for the Oregon music scene in the early 1990s and has since gone to become an acclaimed practitioner. Her bold and colourful designs now adorn several sweatshirts, vests and t-shirts for OBEY, making for a stand-out item in anyone’s wardrobe.

Born in the town of Eugene, Oregon, Cheriel began her own band and record label at the age of 19. Influenced by the popular DIY culture of that time, she played in several all-girl bands (Juned, Adickdid, The Teenangels, The Hindi Guns) and co-created the semi-autobiographical film Down and Out with the Dolls. Her art is also influenced by the many locations in which she has lived and studied, such as, Honduras, Chile, England, Portugal, Spain and her native India.

The artist now lives in Los Angeles and her work examines narratives that recognise the urgency and conflict in society’s continuing attempts to connect with the world. Her influences draw from an array of contrasting ideas, such as East Indian temple imagery, punk rock, and her Pacific Northwest natural environment. All of her visuals reflect upon how humans are constantly trying to connect with others and how these satirical and heroic efforts are episodes of compassion and discomfort. Her striking works combine urban and natural scenery with an element of Pop Art to produce art that is recognisable and full of vitality.
