Aesthetica Art Prize Longlisted Artist Kathy Hinde

Piano Migrations by Kathy Hinde features in the Aesthetica Art Prize longlist of 100 artists from around the world. Her work, part of the Video, Installation & Performance category, unites the two practices of visual art and music composing.

Hinde’s artwork and music grows from a partnership between nature and technology. She often uses open scores, graphic scores and chance procedures to create a framework from which the final piece emerges. This results in work that is often generative, evolving and different each time it is experienced.

For Piano Migrations Hinde recycled an old upright piano into a kinetic sound sculpture. Videos of birds are projected directly onto the piano strings. The movement of the birds triggers small machines to twitch and flutter on the strings. In this creation, nature controls machines which then create delicate music.

Hinde comments: “I aim to create art that generates a poetic and reflective audience experience that enriches an appreciation of the everyday, and invites a heightened awareness of the world around us, combined with a sense of how we interact with each other and with nature, technology and machine systems.”

The interdisciplinary approach Hinde takes involves collaborations with other practitioners, partnerships with scientists, and input from the audience. She has presented her work at TEDGlobal and across Europe, Scandinavia, China, Pakistan, USA, Colombia and Brazil.
