BlackBox: Photography Festival, Nottingham

BlackBox, the creative community of photographers, is hosting the 18th NTU Photography Degree Show this year, which will run between 26 May and 6 June. The two-week exhibition is the culmination of 85 students’ three years of study. Those involved in the course work across different fields of media, such as still photography, moving image and also installation. The Festival not only features works from the students at Nottingham Trent University, but it is also organised and planned by them as well.

BlackBox aims to offer its audience a diverse, intense and interesting visual experience, covering everything from fashion photography to conceptual art. The photographers have been encouraged throughout their study to use photography as a fluid medium that allows them to realise and expand on their creative vision.

The Festival will comprise of series of events that run as part of the Nottingham Trents’ BA Photography course. The event will kick off with an opening on 19 May in the Atrium of the Bonington Art & Design building and will showcase the very best photography that NTU has to offer. This opening marks the beginning of the final exhibition which spans over 16 venues in the heart of Nottingham. This spectacular collaborative event is a unique tradition started by the university in 1997.

In June the Festival will move to London, to be a part of the Free Range Festival. This exhibition is for student photographers all over the country, so the NTU students will have a chance to display their own work alongside other young and gifted photographers from country. Free Range Festival is a great opportunity for young artists to get their work noticed, with large audiences occurring every year. Curators, editors and publishers are often seen at the festival scouting out new and inspiring talent.

The BlackBox members look forward to welcoming the community to celebrate the visual arts through a collection of events in collaboration with local businesses and industry professionals. These events aim to highlight the diversity and quality of the NTU creative community and of the festival as well. The festival will act, not only as a platform for budding photographers, but also as a source of inspiration for audiences across Nottingham.
