Bill Woodrow RA, Burlington Gardens, London

Renowned for transforming the domestic and everyday urban objects into sculpture, Burlington Gardens, the Royal Academy’s new venue for contemporary art, comprises over 50 pieces from Bill Woodrow’s (b.1948) oeuvre in a new exhibition, running from 7 November until 16 February 2014.

One of the group of celebrated British sculptors born in the late 1940s and early 1950s, who have helped redefine public perception of this art form, this show explores Woodrow’s best-known and critically celebrated series, chronologically tracing his work from his post-college pieces of the 1970s up to his latest creations of the 21st century. Through the decades of work, Woodrow’s preoccupation with bringing new life to everyday objects comes to the fore, alongside a commentary on the way in which we interact with the natural world.

The trajectory of Woodrow’s career is traced through his household appliances encased in plaster and concrete, along with his ceramic sculptures. Notable highlights to look out for include Untitled, 1979, a telephone from the Fossil series; TV Blind, 1979 from the Breakdown series; Spin Dryer with Bicycle Frame including Handlebars, 1981; Beekeeper and Four Hives, 1997 from the Beekeeper series and Ultramarine Navigator, 2005 from the Navigator series.
