Art Cinema, mima, Middlesborough

Art Cinema at Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (mima) returns for a one-off special, showing another diverse selection of classic and contemporary artists’ films and videos. Previous events have included work by Salvador Dali, René Clair and Rachel Maclean. Curated by artist and filmmaker AJ Garrett, this year’s cinematic occasion guarantees its audiences an array of unusual sights and sounds. We share a run-down of what’s on at mima this autumn.

Claes Oldenburg Bottle of Notes: 20 Years On
27 September 2013 – 23 January 2014
This year sees the 20th anniversary of Middlesbrough’s iconic sculpture Bottle of Notes. Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. drew inspiration from the history of exploration in the area through the voyages of Captain Cook.

William Tillyer: Against Nature
25 October 2013 – 9 February 2014
This autumn, mima gives over all its major gallery spaces to the work of Middlesbrough-born William Tillyer, in the largest presentation by a single artist at mima since the gallery’s opening in 2007.

Bracelets, necklaces and rings from mima’s jewellery collection are displayed alongside videos celebrating the 2012 #WEARMIMA project.
