We are delighted to announce the judging panel for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2019. The panel comprises influential art figures, including curators, directors and artists whose expertise spans all media. These industry leaders are looking for innovative, responsive works across a range of disciplines, recognising technical skill and bold concepts.
Stubbs is Director of Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) in Liverpool, an organisation at the cutting-edge of art and new media that is key to Liverpool’s ongoing cultural renaissance. He has commissioned and produced over 350 exhibition programmes and is also a moving image artist who has been shown at Baltic, Tate, BBC and C4.
Curator of Exhibitions & Research at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead, Vincentelli has curated exhibitions with Ed & Nancy Kienholz, Steve McQueen, Elizabeth Price, Lindsay Seers, Yoko Ono and more. He has previously worked as a Curator at Ikon Gallery, Birmingham, and at the Arts Council England.
Federico is Co-founder & Managing Director of Aesthetica, who has developed the magazine into an international brand alongside the Aesthetica Short Film Festival and the Creative Writing Award. She is passionate about artists who push boundaries and create innovative works; those that inspire discussion, surrounding form or content, and speak about the world in which we live.
Co-curator of The Future Starts Here at the V&A, an innovative show highlighting ground-breaking design projects, Pestana works as a curator in the Design, Architecture and Digital Department at the V&A and is co-director of The Decorators collective. Mariana has taught spatial and interactive design at Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, and Royal College of Arts.
Clark is an artist whose work links history, politics and representation through a range of forms. He engages with state censorship to explore unseen experiences and processes of control and incarceration in the “Global War on Terror.” Clark has published six books, won several awards and exhibited widely in major solo shows at the ICP, New York and the Imperial War Museum, London.
En Liang Khong
Liang Khong is Assistant Digital Editor at frieze magazine. He is also a regular arts reviewer for acclaimed publications such as The Times Literary Supplement <>and Financial Times. He previously worked as a journalist at openDemocracy, specialising in Chinese human rights, and his writing on art and politics has also appeared in Prospect, the New Statesman and The New Inquiry.
Dr Itandehui Jansen
Edinburgh College of Art’s Programme Director for Film & TV, Jansen is a filmmaker and researcher interested in the interrelation between fiction and documentary. Jansen has been a jury member for many different international film festivals, and has screened films at Amsterdam International Documentary Film Festival and Morelia International Film Festival.
Broadhead is Head of Research and Programme Leader for the MA Creative Practice at Leeds Arts University. Having studied Visual Arts at Lancaster and Art History at Leeds Metropolitan University her teaching experience is wide-ranging. She is currently undertaking research that investigates the experiences of mature students studying art and design at HE level.
Michelle Williams Gamaker
Practising artist and lecturer in BA Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, Williams Gamaker’s moving image and performance work explores the fiction-making of 20th Century British and Hollywood films. A key focus is the development of “fictional activism”: the restoration of marginalised characters as central figures. She is co-founder of the Women of Colour Index (WOCI) Reading Group.
